1) J.D. Salinger’s toilet - $1 million

A toilet claimed to be from the former home of the Catcher in the Rye author was listed on eBay for $1 million in 2010. The listing stated that the toilet was “uncleaned and in its original condition”.

The toilet was accompanied by a letter from the current owner of the house, stating that she and her husband removed the item whilst renovating.

The seller suggested that Salinger had possibly come up with some ideas for his works whilst sitting on the toilet.

2) Justin Bieber’s hair - $40,668

Bieber ditched his trademark fringe in 2011 and presented his off cut hair as a belated birthday gift to Ellen DeGeneres when he appeared on her chat show.

DeGeneres proceeded to sell the hair on eBay to raise money for a charity which rescues abused animals. The hair sold for a staggering $40,668.

3) Britney Spears’ used chewing gum - $14,000

A piece of chewing gum spat out by Britney Spears was sold on eBay for $14,000 in 2004.

The gum was not accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. The eBay listing featured pictures of the gum, a copy of a ticket stub from the place where the gum was discovered and what the seller describes as “a personal story of procurement”.

4) Hugh Laurie’s cane from House - $8,300

The original cane used by Laurie in the pilot of popular medical drama House, was sold on eBay in 2009 for $8,300.

The auction was conducted by the Television Academy Foundation to raise money for Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

5) Tissue used by Scarlett Johansson - $5,300

A tissue used by Lost in Translation star Scarlett Johansson was sold for $5,300 on eBay in 2008. It was handed to Johansson by Tonight host Jay Leno after the film star said that she had caught a cold.

After blowing her nose on the tissue, she put it in a bag and signed it. The proceeds from the sale went to Johansson's chosen charity, USA Harvest.

6) Justin Bieber’s space suit - $5,000

Not usually know for his cosmological exploits, this grey, lightening patterned space suit was worn by the teen sensation at the 2011 Superbowl.

The auction also featured a similar suit worn by Ozzy Osbourne which sold for $3,350. The proceeds of the sale went to the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program.

Sharon Osbourne, patron of the charity said of the suits "Justin was sweating all day, so it's covered in his sweat. They are unbelievable outfits … They're signed by the guys and it smells just like Justin! The money goes to a great, great cause."

7) Justin Timberlake’s half eaten French toast - $3,154

A piece of French toast half eaten by former N-Sync and Social Network star Justin Timberlake sold for $3,154 on eBay in March 2006.

The toast was sold by a DJ from the radio station Z-100, where Timberlake had been a guest. The DJ noted that Timberlake had only eaten one bite of his toast and speedily posted the remains on eBay, with the proceeds going to charity.

The toast was purchased by 19 year-old N-Sync fan Kathy Summers who said that she would "probably freeze-dry it, then seal it … then put it on my dresser."

8) Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s breath in a jar - $530

A jar containing air exhaled by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie was sold for $529.99 to online casino GoldenPalace.com, who have a reputation for purchasing strange items of pop memorabilia at auction.

The jar was taken to the premiere of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in California. As the stars walked past, the jar was opened to capture the celebrity air molecules.

9) Gary Coleman’s sweatpants - $500

In 2008, a pair of Gary Coleman’s Gap Kids sweat pants was sold on eBay for $500 to talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

The winning bid for the sweatpants was $400,000 but the payment was never made. It was only then that Kimmel’s $500 offer was accepted.

10) Lost Charlie Chaplin film - £3.30

An antique collector from Essex, UK, purchased a container with an old film inside from eBay for £3.30. The film inside was titled “Charlie Chaplin in Zepped”, a previously unseen Chaplin film.

The film has since been valued at £40,000.
