Antique And Vintage Barbers Chairs are chairs found in barbers and hairdressers and used by customers.

History & Description

Normally made from leather and metal, barber chairs can be extremely heavy and are usually equipped with mechanisms that can adjust their height.

The first mass-produced barber chairs were manufactured in the 1850s but it wasn’t until 1878 that the Archer Company of Saint Louis patented the first one-piece reclining barber chair with an attached footrest. This design was later improved by a succession of barber chair producers, including Eugene Berninghaus of Cincinnati and Theodore Koch of Chicago, who incorporated revolving mechanisms in the late-nineteenth century.

Guide to collectors

There is a growing demand for antique barber chairs and they are becoming increasingly popular items among collectors. However, there are a limited number of online dealers who sell antique barber chairs. A couple of examples include; Gameroomantiques.com and Barberchairsforsale.net.

While examples of antique barber chairs are very rare at international auction houses, such as Sotheby’s and Bonhams, they are occasionally sold on online biddings sites. In February 2012, eBay advertised several pages of antique barber chairs and prices ranged from $250 to $2,9991.1

The price of antique barber chairs depends on a number of factors, including their age, condition and the sophistication of the adjustable height mechanism. As a general rule, antique barber chairs that were produced by Berninghaus and Koch are highly sought after, while collectors can expect to pay up to $5,000 for antique barber chairs manufactured by Ernest Koken.2
