Antique Cast Iron Skillets
Antique Cast Iron Skillets are original, collectible metal cooking implements.

Brief history and description

Cast iron skillets were first mass-produced during the 19th century, and were used for searing, frying or browning foods.

The Griswold Manufacturing Company (based in Erie, Pennsylvania) started manufacturing the now-famous Griswold skillets in 1865. Griswold's skillets were typically stamped with the word "Erie" on the bottom until 1909, however, some of their skillets were also stamped with a depiction of a spider in a spider web up until 1905.

The French-based Le Creuset was another firm known for manufacturing cast iron skillets, and produced a large number of skillets between the 1920s until the early 1950s. Le Creuset skillets are typically enamelled in bright colours on the outside and feature a matte black on the inside.

Guide for collectors

Griswold skillets that feature a spider and web design are considered to be the most rare, as they were only produced up until 1905. Cast iron skillets that are sold as a set are considered to be rare, but not necessarily the most valuable.

Restoration of an antique cast iron skillet is recommended, but only if there is noticeable damage, however, restoring an antique cast iron skillet may decrease its value.
