History & Description

Henry McKenna bourbon is a type of bourbon whiskey that is produced by Heaven Hill Distilleries Inc., based in Bardstown, Kentucky.

In 1837, Henry McKenna emigrated from Ireland to the United States and brought with him his family’s whiskey recipe. Having settled in Fairfield, Kentucky, McKenna established a factory in 1855 and began distributing bourbon whiskey throughout the southern states.

McKenna improved on his original recipe by adapting his techniques to the local Kentucky grains, especially corn, and he soon began producing what is now known as Kentucky’s Finest Table Whiskey.

Guide for collectors

While not as famous as other American bourbon manufacturers, Henry McKenna bourbon bottles are still highly prized among whiskey related collectors. However, instances of antique Henry McKenna bourbon whiskey bottles are extremely rare at auction.

Antique Henry McKenna bourbon whiskey bottles are also sold on internet bidding sites, such as eBay. In April 2012, eBay advertised a number of examples of Henry McKenna bourbon bottles and prices ranged between $5 and $45.

Henry McKenna bourbon bottles are relatively inexpensive products and prices very rarely exceed $50.

Henry McKenna bourbon bottles are typically made from stoneware or crock pottery and are characterised by a blue floral design and typeface over a white background. Most feature two small handles at the top of the jug near to a small "sipping hole", however, examples with only one handle are particularly sought after by collectors.
