Daniel Defoe Rare Books And Memorabilia are collectible items relating to the 17th/18th century English writer Daniel Defoe.

Brief history/biography

Daniel Defoe was born sometime between 1659 and 1661 and died on April 24th, 1731, and was an English writer, trader and journalist. Not only did Defoe pen over 560 books and pamphlets during his lifetime, he is also considered to be the "founder of British journalism" and the "pioneer of economic journalism" as well.

Robinson Crusoe, which was published in 1719, has been declared as Defoe's most famous novel and is also said to be one of the most "widely" published books in history; (although the early first edition title of the book was The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner). Some of the many other famous novels Defoe penned include The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719), Serious reflections during the life and surprising adventures of Robinson Crusoe: with his Vision of the angelick world (1720), Captain Singleton (1720), Journal of the Plague Year (1722), Captain Jack (1722), Moll Flanders (1722), and Roxana (1724), to name a few.

Defoe also wrote various other travel and non-fiction books, some of which include Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain (1724-27), The Complete English Tradesman (1726) and London, the Most Flourishing City in the Universe (1728).

  • Sotheby's in New York sold the first edition copy of The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe of York, Mariner (1719) for $153,600 in December of 2004, and another first edition copy of The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe of York, Mariner (1719–1720) for $24,000 in April of 2005.
  • PBA Galleries in San Francisco, California sold the first edition copy of The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe of York, Mariner (1719-1720) for $25,000 in November of 2006.

Christie's in London sold:

  • First edition copies of The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner, The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe; Being the Second and Last Part of His Lifeand Serious Reflections during the Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe: with his vision of the angelick world (1719-1720) for £45,410 in June of 2004.
  • First edition copies of The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner, The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoeand Serious Reflections during the Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe: with his vision of the angelick world (1719-1720) for £141,250 in November of 2001.

Christie's in New York sold:

  • A first edition copy of The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner (1719) for $88,125 in October of 2001.
  • A first edition copy of the same title for $36,000 in June of 2006.
  • First edition copies of The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner, The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe; Being the Second and Last Part of His Life, and Serious Reflections During the Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719-1720) for $77,675 in December of 2003.

Documents

  • Sotheby's in London sold an autograph manuscript of the poem ""Of Resignation'' (1708) for £25,550 in December of 2000.
  • Christie's in London sold two autographed letters written by Defoe to Thomas Bowrey (circa 1708) along with other documents written by Bowrey for £15,600 in July of 2007.

Guide for collectors

First edition copies of The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner are considered to be the most rare and valuable.

Memorabilia that was once signed by Defoe is also considered to be extremely rare, along with any of Defoe's poems.
