The sale of items from the legendary late collector set new participation records for a Sotheby’s UK auction.
According to the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act’s definition, “vintage” refers to pieces manufactured within the last 100 years and can include items made as recently as the 1980s.
Jax Beer was first produced in 1913, at the Jax Brewing Company in Jacksonville, Florida, US.
Following the end of prohibition the beer gained popularity throughout the south-eastern US, alongside Jax Stout and Jax Ale.
The company was sold to the New Orleans-based Jackson Brewing Company in 1956.
By the 1960’s it had become the 10th largest brewery in the US.
The Jackson Brewing Company went bankrupt in 1974 and Jax Beer’s rights were acquired by the San Antonio, Texas-based Pearl Brewing Company.
The beer continues to be made by Pearl today.1
